Hi everyone! I hope you guys and gals have had a good couple of weeks. I sure have had some ups and downs. I had found myself in a slump. I was having trouble getting up from bed to put in my mileage. I was just not getting it done. Good news! The past two weeks I have fully recovered from my laziness and have begun training once again. I’ve put in five days of running out of seven in the past two weeks. This time it has been different. I have now incorporated stretching, rolling and speed drills. This is something that I have never done in my training.
Here’s what I’ve been up too…
Blanca saw this book on runners magazine and she went on a search.
So here is the finished product. I totally forgot we finally got ourselves a blender. Now we have our fruit smoothies daily.
We have been able to replicate some of our Jamba Juice favorites.
Blanca was having some pain on her toe since running New Orleans full in February. We almost missed out on our church family. Good thing all is well and we made it on time.
After finding out all was ok she returned to training immediately.
My wife Blanca mentioned this race was fun and tough. She gave it her all. Unfortunately half a mile prior to securing a top three position she took a wrong turn. A total of about 15-20 people also got lost. After it was all set and done a 1:45 half turned into a 3:45 full.
This is Blanca after her race. She doesn’t mean it I promise.
I’m just excited that we are back on track. I apologize for couple of weeks of no activity.
Have a wonderful week and God bless.
Good afternoon everyone! There is officially eleven days left until we are at the starting line of the New Orleans Marathon. I have to say I am really excited to officially start our journey in completing one race in every state. At the beginning of the year I set my goals for 2015 which were to run over 1,000 miles this year and have another personal best. As of today I have completed 50 miles which is good but a bit behind last years rate.
My training has honestly been great at times and hard at times. Today’s run was comfortable and enjoyable even though it was on the treadmill. Seven miles completed!!!
This past Saturday the 10th I was not able to make it to our Downtown Run Group (DRG). It was really cold and drizzling some of the roads were actually closed. Later that afternoon the weather was a bit better I decided to go complete my Saturday must run. I did it!!! I actually did it!!!
My lovely wife is also in her personal journey preparing herself to complete her first full marathon and it’s located outside of our Texas.
Beginning this year Blanca and I have began adding a little bit of decoration to our apartment. This gives us the motivation to keep moving forward and keep working hard to achieve our goals.
I began this blog telling my story and how I literally stumbled upon running. I still have a couple more posts to catch up to date but I figured I would take a break and talk about my goals for 2015 with a 2014 recap of successes and failures!
I started 2014 with two “resolutions” or goals in mind
1. Have a new PR under 1:46:00
2. Run a total of 1,000 miles
So it was the first of January and I started with a ten mile run. After that I continued to go pretty much every other day. I felt like I was in the best shape of my life on track to beat my old PR of two years back.
First try came in March with the Bearathon that takes place in Waco, Texas at the famous Baylor University.
Couple of weeks later we had an OCR or obstacle course race. We did really well as I came in fourth for the males and my now wife Blanca came in first for females!!!
It was awesome!! I got to run with a very very great friend of mine Rudy!! He dove into running one day and just didn’t stop!! And congrats to him he is now engaged as well!!!! Oh I forgot to say I PRd!!! I finished with a time of 1:45:52!!! First resolution check!!
2 weeks later my wife Blanca and I find ourselves at one of our favorite events the 13.1 series in Dallas!!
Well what can I say but what an event!! We both PR’d!! She cut her best time by if I’m correct by like 12 minutes coming in at around 1:45:20 and I beat my PR at 1:44:52!!!
2014 was full of surprises, great times and frustrating times. Running a half with a bad stomach to cutting my training down in the summer due to leg fatigue. I even injured my leg playing soccer two weeks prior to Dallas but overall it was a year like no other!! I got married, traveled, and beat my record time twice!!! So the question now stands. What for 2015??
1. Do run 1000 miles
2. Beat my time of 1:44:52
Next race New Orleans Rock n Roll on January 25th
Happy New Year!!!
Ok so that was great. I was just introduced to the wonderful world of running but is that it? Christmas and New Years came and went and I still didn’t know what my new adventure would be. Well it’s not like my New Years resolution in the beginning of 2010 was to run period especially not 13.1 miles.
Sometime around February 2011 I was searching online now by this time I did decide that I wanted to train again for another race but what would be my motivation? I always run in remembrance of my aunt and especially for my health but I figured that I could do something special with this new hobby of mine. I was searching and searching and suddenly I came across group of people who run for the purpose of providing clean water to villages in Africa. It was Team World Vision. Now I’m not a big fan of asking others for donations but I’ve always had a heart for mission whether that was to go myself or support from home. I took a leap of faith!!!
I set up my web page and ordered my shirt.
The race I signed up for was the 13.1 series. This particular race was taking place in Dallas, Texas in the month of October.
I continued my training running 4-5 times a day straight out of work. Summer was on the way out and fall was coming and and before I knew it we were at Luke’s Locker across Southern Methodist University ready to pick up my bib!!
After meeting one of my coaches we left to eat and rest. As we arrived at the downtown Arts District I see my teammates.
And we’re off!!! I believe I was the only San Antonio World Vision runner amongst all the Dallas runners. I ran and felt so good that yes ….
At the end I was able to reach my goal and I did fundraise $1,310.00 and as a team we got $440,000 and now 4,000 people have access to clean water.
This particular run has been one of my most memorable moments ever. The race was so well organized and the route was fantastic!! This race would become an annual tradition for me and my family.
Summer 2010 my brother started telling me that he wanted to run the Rock n Roll Marathon. I was at a loss, I had no idea what this meant. He explained to me that it was a race or a run that consisted of 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles I was at a loss for words. I had a flash back. The last time I ran was in High school and it was mandatory to run cross country to make the team. I remember running the first race of the season and boy was I embarrassed. Out of the whole race I was second to last and the measly 3 mile race was horrendous. He asked me the question I did not want to hear. I said, “I do not know.” The reason for my answer was my past experience and the dedication it takes to seriously train.
After a week I let my brother know that I would train with him but would not run the race, I guess I really did not want to have the same experience I had back in high school and coming in at the end. We trained at a park close across the street from our High School. A couple weeks passed then a month to a month and a half. Then as training was going well my brother lets me know that he will not be running the Rock n Roll and his reason was because of school. He continued training but not on a daily basis as I did.
My training was going so well that yes I Daniel A. Martinez would run the Rock n Roll Half Marathon. It is a year I would never forget. My aunt had passed away and that was a big motivator to push me to run for her. This is something many people did not know. I continued to train!! My schedule consisted of work at 10 am to 5 pm then I went home had a change of clothes and withing 30 min I was stretching ready to run. It was actually satisfying.
I was ready!!!!!! Had my BIB # 30765 had my new Adidas Adizero Adios shoes and all that was left was food for my stomach and sleep for my body!! San Antonio November 14, 2010
I got to say it was a good run. Not to long ago did I hear a professional runner say, “You are always going faster than you think you are.” I felt good but I did not know how well I was doing. Originally on my registration I entered an estimated finish time of 3:30 little did I know my training was going to pay off.
This was one of the greatest moments in my life!! I achieved and completed a race that was not even on my radar at the beginning of the year. I ran 13.1 miles in 2:02:01 which is 1:30 less than I would have imagined. I was healthy and in shape for the first time ever. This was the beginning of something special to come in the future. Little did I know that running would be my thing, running would help others around the world, running would come to motivate other lives around me. I come to let everyone know how ran has changed me and can change you. I will continue to blog about my life in running, accomplishments, goals and much more. I hope you enjoyed and I hope to inspire others to RUN!!!
